Background

The α-olefins are important high-end organic feedstock. Mainly include linear α-olefin (LAO) products like butene-1, hexene-1, and octene-1. Widely used in polyethylene monomer, and high-end lubricants, pour point depressants and surfactants. Produced by petrochemical and coal chemical routes.

In 2016, North America accounted for nearly 40% of global LAO production, followed by the Middle East (19%), Western Europe (16%), and China (10%). US shale gas based new polyethylene plant, to drive demand for LAO monomer. China's coal chemical industry and petrochemical based polyethylene, and high-end lube market, will also drive α-olefins demand steadily. With the further expansion of domestic supply & demand gap, the multinationals will pay more attention to China’s α-olefins market, and is expected to invest projects. Domestic companies are also interested in investing in a-olefins projects to achieve high value-added upgrades.

Over the next few years, the development and application of butene-1, hexene-1 and octene-1 will be critical. Paraffin cracking, CTL by-product extraction, mixed C4 separation, ethylene oligomerization will be the mainstream processes for LAO production. How the α-olefins market growth space?
