Background

Metallocene polyolefins (m-POs) are novel high-end products produced by using metallocene coordination compounds as catalysts. Due to the excellent performance, m-PE and m-PP market increased rapidly in recent years. China has become a big market of polyolefins production and consumption; however, m-PO still mainly depends on import, which has great potentials and is attracting attention by domestic producers and R&D organizations.

The m-POs are becoming an important direction for policy support and industrial upgrading of polyolefins in China. <Catalogue of Encouraged Foreign Investment Industries>, <Catalogue of Guidance for Industrial Structure Adjustment (Draft for Comments)>, and other documents published in 2019, explicitly mentioned the production and development of high-end polyolefins, such as m-PE copolymerized with high carbon α-olefins.

China is making breakthroughs in m-PO technology and industrialization, and has made achievements in catalyst. Several subsidiaries of Sinopec and PetroChina have successfully developed a series of m-PO grades. Besides, m-PO equipment will be built in Sino-Kuwait refining & chemical integration project and ExxonMobil Huizhou project.
