China's Coal Chemical Industry Annual Report 2020 (white paper) shows that: Modern coal chemical industry is a coal based clean energy chemical industry system with advanced coal gasification technology. Due to the shortage of oil and gas and the relative abundance of coal resources in China, modern coal chemical industry can realize the supplement and partial substitution of oil and natural gas resources by relying on technological innovation.
Modern coal chemical industry includes: coal to liquid (CTL), coal (methanol) to olefin (CTO/MTO), coal-to-synthesis natural gas (SNG), coal to mono ethylene glycol (MEG), coal to hydrogen (H2), coal to ethanol, coal to aromatics and other projects.
Through the summary of the 2009-2015 demonstration stage, the modern coal chemical industry has ushered in the industrialization upgrading demonstration stage in 2016-2020. In the context of high oil prices before 2014, modern coal chemical projects set off an investment boom in China. However, there is still room for further improvement in technology maturity, water consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, environmental carrying capacity and energy efficiency. Since 2015, the international oil price has entered the range of US $50-80 / barrel, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has tightened the approval of coal chemical projects. Coal chemical industry is facing the dual pressure of economy and environmental protection. In general, during the “13th Five-Year Plan" period, China's modern coal chemical industry, represented by coal to olefin, coal to ethylene glycol and coal to liquid, has greatly improved in industrial scale, plant operation level, key technology and equipment development.
Since March 2020, affected by the COVID-19 and the crude oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia, the oil price once fell below 20 USD/bbl, and it has recovered to USD/bbl at the end of the year. The coal chemical industry with different product routes has profits and losses. Among them, the CTO enterprises converted to PP S2040 high melt spinning materials and other epidemic prevention materials, which not only took on the social responsibility, but also obtained rich profits.
At the central economic work conference held from December 16 to 18, 2020, the key task of 2021 is to achieve the related work of “carbon peaking and carbon neutralization”. It is clearly pointed out that we should speed up the formulation of the action plan for reaching the peak of carbon emissions before 2030, and support the places with conditions to take the lead in reaching the peak. At present, the preparation of the action plan has been started.
It can be predicted that China's coal chemical industry will face more new challenges and opportunities during the "14th Five-Year Plan". Optimizing industrial layout, safety, environmental protection and clean production, technology and equipment upgrading, high-end product development, and carbon neutralization scheme configuration are the main development directions of coal chemical industry in the next stage.
