2023 Power to X Techno-Economic Seminar

Power to X process is to transform electricity into other forms of products easier to storage so as to satisfy the demand on energy, chemicals and materials of individual industry sectors. As of the date, most representative Power to X route is the green hydrogen framework, i.e. to use renewable energy based electricity (Power) for green hydrogen generation through water electrolysis, and further to convert into multiple forms of green fuels and/or energy storage media (X). Also, CO2 and water direct electrolysis to syngas process is currently under industrial scale demo, and expected to become another principle path of Power to X.

 

Mainstream water electrolysis processes include alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. AWE is a relatively matured process featuring of bigger single unit capacity and lower cost, hence occupying the majority market share; on the other hand, PEM applies higher current density and thus better responds to the green power rate fluctuation, and therefore is believed of great developing potential. At the same time, SOEC and AEM processes are being promoted for bulk production and commercial application

 

Power to X can not only produce energy, but also materials and chemicals. The water electrolysis-based green hydrogen itself is an important direction of energy development. Use of green hydrogen and CO2 can synthesize green methanol, green syngas (H2/CO) and green ethanol etc; Using green methanol or green syngas as raw material, the industry can produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), gasoline, diesel, olefins and aromatics etc; green hydrogen can also be used for green ammonia production, as fertilizer raw material, or direct as an energy source.

 

According to an ASIACHEM research, Chinese wind power, PV power and energy storage industries are going on the way of cost-down while water electrolysis to H2 process is further improved to reduce cost and increase energy efficiency. ASIACHEM “China Green Ammonia Industry Annual Report” showed the data that when green power cost gets down to CNY0.1/kWh, corresponding Power to X route green methanol and green ammonia costs would be CNY2758/t and 2683/t respectively, forming a preliminary cost competition ability.

 

2023 Power to X Techno-Economic Seminar is to be held on Nov 29th in Suzhou.
