ASIACHEM Businesses
8th Methanol & Emerging Derivatives Forum

Background

---- New opportunities from raw materials to high-value derivatives

CTO / MTO, especially coal based methanol-to-polyolefin, still maintain good profit in the low oil prices. In 2016, driven by the development of CTO/MTO, China added new methanol capacity of 7.4 Mt/a. By the end of 2016, China's methanol capacity was about 75 Mt/a. And imported 8.8 Mt methanol from overseas, a 59% Y-o-Y growth than 2015.

ASIACHEM’s <China CTO/MTO Annual Report 2017> shows that in 2016, China's CTO/MTO scale reached 11.24 Mt/a of olefins, of which the demand for outsourced methanol reached 13.86 Mt/a. MTO/MTP plants operating load and the new projects start-up have become the main factors of the methanol price fluctuations. In 2016, the traditional methanol derivatives, formaldehyde, DME, DMF, acetic acid, MTBE was stable developed; as fuel application of methanol to gasoline (MTG) and methanol blended gasoline development are limited. It is expected that in the next few years, olefins will still be the most significant derivative. Several new emerging trends are in the horizon.

NDRC lowered the natural gas station price of 0.7 RMB/CBM, then several closed natural gas based methanol factory restarted. In 2017, the South China Sea gas hydrate test successfully. The United States and Iran will build new methanol and derivatives projects in 2017-2020. How will natural gas based methanol develop? Technologies breakthroughs are made in Methanol to fuel ethanol, methanol to MEG, methanol to PX, which direction can become the stars in next 3-5 years?

The 8th Methanol & Emerging Derivatives Forum will be held in Nanjing on August 29-30, 2017. The upcoming event will explore the methanol and emerging derivatives policy and market opportunities; coal and natural gas based methanol capacity expansion; MTO/MTP projects & feedstocks; emerging methanol derivatives markets and technologies; and methanol storage & transportation as well as environmental issues.
