Green Ammonia Boom Is Soon to Come!

State policy is encouraging to apply green low-carbon process to produce ammonia. NDRC ”Ammonia Industry Energy Conserving Carbon Reducing Process Refitting & Upgrading Practice Guidelines” published in Feb 2022 proposed to carry out green and low-carbon energy to ammonia process research and demo. Apply green process to optimize ammonia raw material structure and increase green hydrogen use proportion. Strengthen renewable energy to ammonia process research, reduce carbon emission of ammonia process. The target is to, by 2025, ammonia capacity of above benchmark level energy efficiency in the industry should be elevated up to 15% from the level of 2020, 7%.

 

Green ammonia process research and application both in China and abroad have made great advancement. The process research covers advanced ammonia process and catalytic coupling of green hydrogen, novel LT/LP ammonia process and catalyst, front edge ammonia processes (photo-catalysis, electrochemistry, plasma, chemical chain etc.) As of the date, there are several big size green hydrogen/ammonia projects under the way of progression, the first commercial size project is expected to start up in 2023. Chinese green ammonia projects are also on the stage of test and development.

 

Owing to flourish development of global green power/green hydrogen industries, green ammonia the carrier of green hydrogen, possesses obvious advantage than hydrogen in transport & storage. It is predictable that in future green ammonia would be traded and shipped in large scale all over the world. In addition, green ammonia is a fuel of zero carbon emission and can be used as fuel to thermal power plant, marine fuel and ammonia fuel cell etc. Relevant process development and application are worthy of concern.

 

—CHN Energy 300kt/a Green Ammonia Project Approved for Registration

 

On Jul 1st, CHN Energy Ulat Middle County Ganqimaodu Port Processing Industry Park wind power/PV power/hydrogen/ammonia integrated novel type energy storage process demo project 300kt/a green ammonia unit was approved to register.

 

The project is to be built in Ganqimaodu Port Processing Industry Park, Ulat Middle County, Bayanaull City of Inner Mongolia, occupying a land of 23-hectare area, to host 104700m2 buildings for workshops, warehouses and office area. Scope of construction is mainly a 300kt/a green ammonia process line along with water, power and steam supplies and other infrastructures. General investment is estimated of CNY2.354bn.

 

—Yingde Gas to Build Green Ammonia Project

 

On Jul 26th 2022, China Hydrogen Energy Co Ltd and Yingde Group signed cooperation agreement to jointly invest in Dalate County, Ordos City, and build green hydrogen/ammonia project. This would be Yingde’s first green ammonia project.

 

Green ammonia is a primary carrier of green hydrogen. Capacity of the signed project should include 9.3kt/a green hydrogen and 50kt/a green ammonia, and upstream accessory 400MW PV power station and electrochemical energy storage facility. The project would apply green hydrogen and green power-based nitrogen as raw materials, through a LT/LP synthesis to produce green ammonia of 99.9% purity.
