On Oct 26th, Liaoning Chaoyang carbon dioxide green hydrogenation to 200kt/a green methanol project received approval for registration! The project is owned by Huadian Liaoning Energy Co Ltd. 

 

Huadian Liaoning Energy Co Ltd was set up in Aug 2009, appointed in charge of Huadian’ develop planning, energy project development & construction, operation management, power/heat marketing businesses in Liaoning Province, as a comprehensive basic energy enterprise integrating thermal power, wind/solar power, coal sale/marketing, heat/steam/energy supplies in its business scope.

 

Methanol is a clean energy as well as an important chemical raw material, and the core of “Methanol Economy concept. Most of the energy & chemical industry chain processes based on methanol as basic raw material are quite matured and ready for large capacity promotion & application. Against the background of carbon peaking/carbon neutral, Green Methanol“ is more and more concerned by research institutes, industrial fields and capital market.

 

There are two ways to prepare green methanol: by green hydrogen and CO2; or by bio-base raw materials.

 

Green H2 + CO2 to green methanol process is stepping forward from industrial pilot to large size commercial application. The primary mean to produce green hydrogen is by renewable energy-sourced power water-electrolysis to H2, with the power cost accounting for around 80% of the whole process. ”Green power”, represented by wind/solar power, is expected to become the main power source by 2050 and, when the green power cost can be reduced to below CNY0.15/kWh, thus produced green hydrogen would of extreme cost advantage. CO2 capture, concentration and shipping technologies have realized industrial application, finding the keys in how to lower cost and energy demand.

 

Preparing bio-methane by biomass fermentation or obtaining bio-syngas from biomass gasification is another way to produce bio-base green methanol. With the water-electrolysis to green hydrogen industry chain going to maturity, make-up of green hydrogen into bio-base syngas is feasible to fully use the bio-base carbon source and increase green methanol output. Biomass gasification process and large quantity stable supply of biomass raw material are the key to project success.
