Hydrogen Annual Output 2-3Mt! Sinopec Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Industrial Chain Distribution Latest Progresses

Hydrogen energy industry is a huge industrial chain from hydrogen production, to storage, to application. Hydrogen energy system not only is the energy of fuel cell vehicle (FCV) transportation, but also plays important roles in large-scale energy storage, green chemical raw feed etc. Hydrogen energy usher rapid development in the world now, countries and areas including China, the US, Japan, European Union, Canada and South Korea all formulate hydrogen energy development plans. In Mar 2019, hydrogen energy was first written in <Report on the Work of the Government>, coming up with ‘Promoting Charging, Hydrogen Refueling Facilities Construction’.

 

As one of leading enterprises in global energy chemical industry, Sinopec is now actively promoting distributions on hydrogen energy and fuel cell industrial chains.

 

In Mar 2019, MA Yongsheng, vice general manager of Sinopec, stated that, Sinopec has already distributed hydrogen energy industry, and done related researches on hydrogen fuel cells.

 

TONG Dejian, general manager of Sinopec Chemical Commercial Holding Co. Ltd. Beijing Petrol Branch, stated that, Sinopec hydrogen annual output is around 2-3Mt and now, Sinopec hydrogen energy sources include hydrogen production units, oil refining reforming byproduct hydrogen and ethylene production byproduct hydrogen. ASIACHEM research indicates that, typical hydrogen sources of Sinopec are shown as below:

 

ü  Jan 2014, Sinopec Maoming Petrochemical Company oil product quality upgrade and reconstruction engineering supported project coal to hydrogen device operation. The device started construction in Sep 2011, which raw materials are coal and refineries’ byproduct high-sulfur petroleum coke and pure oxygen, and can produce 200k m3/h, above 97.5% purity and 4.8MPa industrial hydrogen. The device is China largest coal to hydrogen device on unit yield.

ü  Oct 2018, Sinopec Tianjin Petrochemical 100k m3/a natural gas to hydrogen device started construction and estimated to construction and operation in Mar 2020.

ü  Jan 2019, Sinopec Hainan Refining and Chemical Company 1Mt/a ethylene and oil refining expansion engineering started construction, which constructing 90,000Nm3/h PSA device, 69,100t/a coal to hydrogen device (include ethylene byproduct hydrogen purification) etc.

Information shows that, main investment of Sinopec is the construction of transportation network hydrogen refueling stations. ASIACHEM believes that, Sinopec entering hydrogen supply industry and constructing oil refining and hydrogen refueling stations are benefit for accelerate China hydrogen energy supply. Except abundant capital strength, advantages of Sinopec constructing hydrogen refueling stations mainly come from hydrogen source and sales terminal. Public data shows that, up to end of 2018, China has more than 100k oil refueling stations, among, Sinopec occupation is about 31.60% and it is the enterprise which has the most oil refueling stations in number.

Sep 2019, Sinopec Inner Mongolia Branch signed <Framework Agreement on New Energy Development Cooperation> with Hongda Xingye Co. Ltd. Both parties would cooperate and construct comprehensive stations (hydrogen refueling, gas refueling and oil refueling) and launch business operation. Wuhai Chemical Industry, wholly owned subsidiary of Hongda Xingye, would provide hydrogen production, storage, transportation and hydrogen energy application with technical supports and guarantee operation of cooperation project (hydrogen refueling stations); Sinopec Inner Mongolia Branch participated in construction of hydrogen refueling stations and played advantages of existed 381 stations network distribution, using oil refueling stations attached hydrogen refueling, gas refueling functions or hydrogen refueling stations attached oil refueling and gas refueling functions etc., realizing co-construction, sharing and win-win cooperation mode; responsible for wholly operation work of comprehensive stations.

 

Apr 2019, XIN Guobin, vice minister of MIIT, visited Guangdong Foshan Zhangkeng Oil & Hydrogen Co-construction Station, highly appreciated innovation of Sinopec Guangdong Petroleum, which is to ‘use the current existed oil refueling stations reconstruction to oil & hydrogen co-construction station’, first invented in China, to develop new energy fueling networks. Information shows that, after evaluation, design, prospect, project approval etc. procedures, Zhangkeng Oil & Hydrogen Co-construction Station is estimated to operation at the end of May 2019 and will become China first oil & hydrogen co-construction station, daily hydrogen refueling capacity reaches 400kg and service 30 bus lines and logistics transportation teams around. It is reported that, except Guangdong Foshan, Guangdong Petroleum is also launching oil & hydrogen co-construction project in Guangdong Yunfu.

 

Oct 2018, Japan JXTG Energy Group signed agreement with Sinopec, would co-construct hydrogen refueling stations in China and third parties markets.

 

Oct 2018, Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission held conference in Changping Wangfu Oil Refueling Station and discussed approval and planning of Wangfu Oil & Hydrogen Co-construction Station. Information shows that, in order to promote the construction of hydrogen refueling stations, Sinopec has signed <Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement> with Sinohytec and launched deep cooperation on hydrogen supply, vehicle hydrogen refueling and hydrogen refueling stations operation. In initial stage of market popularization, hydrogen produced by Sinohytec with renewable wind power in Hebei Zhangjiakou will become Sinopec hydrogen source and ensure terminal hydrogen price is no more than CNY 40/kg.

 

Sep 2018, Hydrogen Council released list of new members, among, Sinopec etc. was included.
